Typically, termite control efforts are reserved for private homes and buildings, as well as industrial or business structures owned by companies capable of paying for the cost of termite extermination. Unfortunately, this has all too often meant that at least one type of building has been generally ignored when it comes to termite control and prevention: the publicly owned historic building, of which every city in the world has one.

These buildings are often considered part of the heritage and ancestry of the entire town to which they belong, and most of them are even symbols or landmarks of the area. Yet, frighteningly little goes to their upkeep, in most cases. Governments rarely allot sufficient funds to the preservation of historic buildings, for all that they are often quick to proclaim the importance of such structures. The result is that certain basic procedures of maintenance and upkeep are forgotten when it comes to these buildings, one of the most important ones being checkups for termite infestations and damage.

The problem is not limited to this country. In Shanghai, for instance, engineers are concerned because they estimate a staggering 60% of the city’s historic sites and structures to be infested—and the number is rising. According to the Chinese engineers, who are also talking to termite experts in their area, part of the problem has to do with the heavy use of pine wood and similar building materials at the time the affected buildings were put up—something that holds true for most of the historic buildings in various parts of the US as well. And with global temperatures seeming to be rising steadily due to climate change, the insects are finding ever larger ranges of activity, threatening more and more of the historic wooden buildings in various cities.

All around the world, societies dedicated to the preservation of cultural heritage are banding together to call attention to this oversight. Unfortunately, they are still a stark minority. Very few people realise just how bad the damage has been until the old church or museum they grew up seeing suddenly crumbles, the victim of severe termite infestation and elemental damage. It may be time, say those with keener awareness of the problem, for both government authorities and concerned citizens to come together and raise funds for the inspection and preservation of these beautiful pieces of history. The prevention of termite infestations is not even all that expensive, in all honesty, and inspections may even go for free in certain cases, which is why the omissions with these historical structures are so unreasonable. Termite control professionals the world over also recommend looking into other old buildings—even those that are on private property—to ensure that they are not already harbouring swarms of the insects, which may serve as the sources of further colonies in the future.

If you have taken your car to an auto glass shop for windshield repair at least twice, your chances of having encountered a repair guarantee are pretty high. Of course, there may be exceptions to this: for instance, you might just have been unfortunate enough to have only ever encountered shops that do not provide guarantees for their work. The first thing you should know about repair guarantees is that they are typically a sign of good business. Auto glass repair technicians and windshield replacement specialists always give this guarantee when they are confident in their work, signifying that they have the expertise and skill that you want in a good repair worker.

When you got a windshield repair shop and they tell you they have a repair guarantee, you should ask for the full details of that guarantee. For most cases, the guarantee provided shall be this: 100% satisfaction or else the cost of the repair is refunded to the party paying the invoice. To illustrate how this works, let us take an example.

Let us say Fred goes to a repair shop and has a technician take a look at the nasty crack a rock made on his windshield. The technician tells him it is reparable, and outlines the repair guarantee of the shop besides explaining what Joe has to expect from the repair. This is important because it is quite common for car owners to mistakenly expect a perfect-looking windshield after a repair has been performed on their car: this is very rarely the case, and some form of scarring shall remain over the area where the crack was originally located. The true aim of a windshield repair, after all, is not just to stave off further expansion of the crack but also to restore most of the glass’s integrity, as it is a key structural component of a vehicle. Thus, Fred is reminded that he cannot expect a perfectly fresh-looking windshield after the repair, even if the leftover scarring shall be minimal.

Now Fred agrees to the terms and lets the technician repair the crack. When the technician is done, he shall then bring Fred over to the vehicle so that Fred may inspect the repair. If Fred finds the repair acceptable—meaning the scarring is indeed minimal and would not obstruct driving or the driver’s vision—Fred may take his car and pay the cost of work. If, however, Fred does not like the result, he may then invoke the 100% guarantee. If he or his insurance company has already paid for the windshield repair, the amount shall be refunded to whoever made the payment. If the repair has not been paid for yet, it shall then go unpaid according to the terms of the guarantee.

Why Should You Not Do Windshield Repair in the Day?

In two words: UV light. Ultraviolet light is both the bane and boon of windshield repair: it is instrumental in setting the resins used for filling in and holding together cracks as well as breaks in a damaged windshield, yet it is also instrumental in preventing that resin from setting properly, botching a good number of cracks that were performed without the aid of a UV shield.

The UV shield is an instrument most auto glass repair shops use. It may come in the form of a sort of protective cover that attaches by means of suction cup to the glass; it may also come in the form of a bubble-type shield or dome. DIY car owners shall notice straightaway that no such shield comes with a DIY kit for home glass repairs to your vehicle. This is just another reason to prefer a professional solution to your windshield break, since a lot of the equipment properly used in windshield repair is not readily available in standard home kits for repairing auto glass. A DIY kit also does not have a UV lamp for curing, for instance.

Now if you do a windshield repair in the day, you shall most likely run into one of the biggest problems you can experience while handling auto glass cracks: a premature thickening of the resin. This happens because the resin is formulated to set upon exposure to UV light, and daylight obviously includes UV rays in its gamut of components. Thus, you are likely to have an improperly set resin if you do your repair during the day, when it can harden before it has had the chance to fill up as much of the break as it can. The result shall be a visible blemish or glass scar on your windshield, which may inconvenience you in the future. It may also leave large gaps of air in the crack, which could easily turn into points from which the crack may propagate and get larger once subjected to stress or rapid temperature change.

So what can you do to prevent this from happening? Ideally, you should just send your car to a reliable glass repair shop instead of trying to do your repair by yourself. If you would really prefer to do it at home, however, then do your repair in the garage with blinds or covers over the windows and the doors shut. Limit as much of the sun’s light as you can. It shall not work to simply put your car under a shade because light rays—UV included—bounce off surfaces, which means they can still quite easily reach your windshield even if you place the actual car under direct shadow. Do your windshield repair under an artificial light.
